Montefiore Medical Center
Situation:
Montefiore Medical Center (MMC), an acknowledged leader in academic medicine, is located in the Bronx near the Westchester border. As one of the nation's largest, most comprehensive and respected health-care systems, it operates twenty-four academic departments, each of which supports teaching and research activities in addition to clinical care. Like its peers nationwide, MMC faced ever-dwindling federal funds for research and educational commitments. Unwilling to compromise the quality of care and the Medical Center's reputation for medical innovation and training, forward-thinking administrators recognized early on that the profitability of clinical care delivery was paramount. The challenge was holding each department accountable for balancing revenue and expense.
MMC administrators engaged The CroesOliva Group to enhance performance. Strategizing with individual department chiefs, senior consultants created a unique approach for each department to boost profitability as quickly and efficiently as possible. In some cases the key was improving the billing cycle; in other cases they generated increased revenue by realigning tasks and processes to allow for greater patient volume. In the end, the hard work has paid off with healthy bottom lines and enviable financial footing, even as peer organizations around the country continue to struggle in today's volatile health care marketplace.
The CroesOliva Group Contribution:
The CroesOliva Group tailored departmental revenue-generating plans for Ob/Gyn, Anesthesiology, Radiology, Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Ophthalmology, Rehabilitation, Emergency Medicine, Surgery and Vascular Surgery. These blueprints for success have succeeded in:
- Winning approval, buy-in and commitment to implement change from all department chiefs and administrators
- Honoring the institution's commitment to patient care, teaching and research
"As institutional dollars for research and teaching diminished, and as the organization became increasingly dependent on revenue generated from clinical care delivery, the department chiefs were on the line. We all had lessons to learn about how to deliver patient care more efficiently, productively and profitably. Working individually with each department, The CroesOliva Group led everyone toward a common goal and succeeded where other initiatives had failed."
